Had a brilliant first night here, including going to d.b.a., a specialist beer bar, then grabbing burrito and enchilada from a tiny cafe, then on to a club which played a crazy mix of stuff but had a brilliant unpretentious vibe - heard New Order, Cure, ABC, some italo-disco type stuff, Whip It, hey Mickey, and just a big old load of interesting stuff that you never hear anywhere in English clubs. the crowd were very diverse too - lots of tight-tshirt gay guys, sparkly-skirted fag hags, cute girls that reminded me of Kim Deal & danced in twisty ways, dressed-down couples and groups of various races and sexualities, all sorts. We drank Pabst cause it was cheap and not horrible the way I'd expect lager to be, and even though we should have been going to bed by about 11pm local time, it was really hard to drag ourselves away even when it was after 1am (by which time I guess we'd been up for 25 hours straight!).

Yesterday was grand - took a walk over to the data centre, then then subway to Green Point, for the Brooklyn Brewery tour. They played rock and it was a beautiful sunny day to be drinking their beers, some of which were *incredibly* hoppy and complex. Afterwards we had a wander round N Brooklyn, I very much liked this area as it was all independent cafes, shops & bars, and a definite 'villagey' vibe. Visited some good bars - Brooklyn Ale House and Mugs Ale House, then had Vietnamese tapas, then went to Barcade - the bar with restored arcade games and a big load of interesting beer. We stayed for the start of the chilli cook-off, but when it was obvious there were too many people for us to get samples, we headed off to the Spuyten duyvel where I had mead infused with hop buds, then got home for a lovely big sleep.

Today involved D having to do half an hours work at the data centre, before his boss bought us brunch in a diner (huevos rancheros ftw!) and we had a look round the WTC site and Wall Street, and a sushi picnic at City Hall. Then we chilled out at the South Street seaport, with great views of the river & bridges, before finding an outpost of the Heartland Brewery and sampling all their beers which were surprisingly all excellent.

Now it's decision time as to where to graze tonight - haven't decided yet if we might have yakitori, visit Peter Lueger's steakhouse, or just head to a different neighbourhood and follow our noses into wherever smells good :-)

mine eyes have seen the glory [Nov. 9th, 2009|03:37 pm]

This weekend was a nice one. I was able to get in a lot of time puttering around, cooking, and resting. I hand-pounded some harissa in my beloved mortar, which was an ingredient in a stew of veggies and couscous I made for the dinner I shared with Sassy and Karin. They both brought lots of delicious snacks, and we enjoyed it all with lots of wine and viewings of various music videos, namely a Broadway special Sassy loved and Karin's collection of Roxy Music. I myself brought out the Blur, the Queen, and (of course) crazy Michael Jackson, which I fear might have disturbed my fine guests. (The disco fascist promo teaser for his HIStory video tends to do that to people.) Soon after, I bid my friends goodbye, and I spent a while cleaning up and grooving to music before hitting the sack at 3AM.

I slept in, and then spent most of Sunday on the computer trimming my music collection and downloading a bunch of new-to-me stuff. I now have a respectable collection of David Bowie, Pulp's His'n'Hers (why did I never own this album before?), Neko Case's The Virginian, and various odds and ends. I need to break down and buy Jarvis Cocker's first solo album because I've been playing "Black Magic" over and over again. I also made pigs in blankets and some carrot pickles.

At eveningtide, I went back to Salvage Vanguard to see the Weird Weeds play after not seeing them for a most unseemly amount of time. I enjoyed saying hi to Sandy and teasing Aaron about his suave 70's outfit. The opening act, Geoff Reacher, was sort of like what might happen if the Postal Service adopted John Fahey; he played acoustic guitar in a folksy way, but punctuated it with a huge array of effects pedals and other gizmos that digitally chopped up his sound in an interesting, complex manner. As for the Weeds, I absolutely loved their new, hard-rocking songs, and I found myself swaying to the driving rhythms that I've come to know so well. I also love watching Aaron play; he transforms into some other creature when he's on the axe. I can't wait to hear the new album when it comes out next year.

So, now I'm at work, dealing with bureaucratic red tape and incompetent vendors. It's a good job, but such is life. I also need to figure out a costume for league Thursday night. Busy busy busy!

Interesting and Unique Recipes [Nov. 9th, 2009|04:59 pm]

[visual_therapy]
I can't imagine that I am the only one feeling like this but I have gotten really sick of the same old recipes lately. It seems like I eat the same food every week. I'm wondering if anyone has any recipes (cooking, not baking) that are different and/or use uncommon ingredients/veggies/milk alternatives, etc... And to complicate the matter more, I really don't like to eat anything processed that much. Milk alternatives and tofu/tempeh I'm alright with but other than that I would like to keep the food as pure as possible. I especially like earthy flavors. Can anyone help?

Spreading the Love [Nov. 9th, 2009|09:52 pm]

Just a heads up if you are into cloth pads...I just received the Committed to Cloth package(an early X-mas present from my husband from www.crea8tivemama.etsy.com and they are beyond fabulous. She uses recycled cloth in the most adorable prints, and they are really well made. I just wanted to share, because they are eco-friendly and also cost-effective. And no, it's not any grosser than using cloth diapers on your kids, so check them out. (I don't work for her website---I was just really pleased with my order and wanted to pass it along.)

Almond Paste [Nov. 9th, 2009|09:28 pm]
vegweb
I was looking at this recipe (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=30249.0) for almond milk and I have a question.  The recipe is basically almond paste, water and sugar and the author indicates that you can make it "sugar-free".  However, I was under the impression that almond paste is a mixture of almonds and sugar--usually about 50-50.  So, even if you didn't add any extra sugar, this would still be a fairly sweet drink.  Is there another product called almond paste that is sugar free?  I would love to have on-demand almond milk but don't want the sugar.  Thanks!

My birthday is coming up and I think my husband is gonna do a make-your own vegan ice cream cake a week or so later when we celebrate, but I want to bake an actual cake/cupcakes for my actual birthday. These are the recipes (from this site of course) that I am eyeing.

Probably this will be my demise, but O, what a way to go.

Crunchy whole wheat flaxseed molasses crust, topped with basil-walnut-garlic-lemon-Jesus pesto, pan-seared roma, red & yellow bell peppers, and crimini. Also with pornographic manchego & double-cream French brie. We ate it in low light, for some of the same reasons people have sex in low light.

The Perfect Hummus Recipe? [Nov. 9th, 2009|01:42 pm]

[Tags|]

Hello, all!

My approach to hummus has always been somewhat... un-exact. I tend to take some random quantity of chickpeas, throw things at them (tahini, lemon juice, you know the drill) and blend. Sometimes I end up with great hummus. Sometimes the hummus is, you know, just hummus. Once it was awful (too much salt) but that's pretty rare. But I can never reproduce greatness, because I never measure!

In the past monthish I've been searching for The Perfect Hummus Recipe. Partly for myself, and partly so that when other people ask me how to make hummus I can be less vague... I haven't found it yet. I went through the tags here, and have tried several of the recipes I happened upon. Good! But not Perfect.

Does anyone out there have an amazing hummus recipe that they haven't posted (or that I might have missed)?

Curry and Cake [Nov. 9th, 2009|11:43 pm]

[mood | hungry]

We made lentil curry on Saturday afternoon. Lazy afternoons call for lazy cooking! This curry is a basic curry you can eat with rice, not all that much of a hassle to make and it has a lovely mellow taste in spite of all the spice that goes in it . Its mostly lentils, onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, coriander, mustard etc

Potato Wedges were the side dish.
Spicy Wedges )

And Sunday evening saw chocolate cake. We used chocolate compound and since we fail at icing, roast cashews had to do for topping. It tasted great!

Coconut Milk Creamer! By Soy Delicious [Nov. 9th, 2009|05:04 pm]
vegweb
Yum!
I tried this for the first time-the french vanilla flavor. It is awesome!
I don't drink coffee much or use creamer in coffee when I do drink it, but I have been using it to make Thai Tea and Chai Teas, and wow!
In Thai Restaurants they use evaporated milk which is thick and sweet. This pretty much tastes the same as I remember it being in restaurants.
So good!
It was sort of expensive (2.50 ish) but I really like it!

Do you think there will be a coconut shortage with the explosion of coconut based foods as of late?

Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

Potatoes (russet, new white or red, sweet potatoes- make sure they're all around the same size)
    olive oil
    salt to taste (optional)
slow cooker (size depends on number of potatoes)

Directions:

Scrub the potatoes under running water, and prick lightly with a fork (actually, the pricking is unnecessary, it just makes you feel like you're contributing to the cooking process!). Rub with a small amount of oil, just enough to keep the skins moist, and a pinch of salt.  Place in slow cooker (DO NOT add water,or any other liquid), and cook on low heat 8-10 hours, or ...

[sca] Test recipes, feast notes WAS [Nov. 9th, 2009|09:43 am]

madrun
Saturday and Sunday I spent several hours going through the manuscripts I'm using for the Winter ArtSci Feast. I covered each book with sticky notes and narrowed myself down to 12-15 dishes to test for each course. Eventually I must weed them down. I could easily do an entire feast out of each manuscript but I really love the idea of the theme, so I'm sticking with it. There will be lots of tasting plates for the weirder and more expensive dishes.

The current structure for the feast is three courses, one each for Christian, Jewish and Muslim foods, with a subtlety between each course and a tasting plate for one and three. Each course will have a sweet dish, a vegetarian dish, a bread, a savory meat dish, and a sauce, at minimum. I just can't limit myself to two or three meats for this feast, I just can't do it, but I'm am trying to be mindful of portion sizes. I cannot promise any more vegetables than usual though, medieval European feasts just do not roll that way.

The additional research has begun... serving information and drinks is the next step in the research.

I tested two recipes last night. As usual for me, the weirder one was the bigger success. I was eager to test the tharida recipe and even though I personally think the texture was incorrect, everyone liked it the best. Tharida amounts: 1 onion, pureed=3 c of veg broth=caraway, pepper, coriander=1 lb shredded french bread=1 block frozen spinach=1 lb full-fat feta cheese=>9 ppl. Sent Sovi Carrot dish: 2 lb carrots=4 tbl pork fat=2 oz shredded romano=>9 ppl. I will refine the spicing and presentation for both, the carrot dish needed work.

I was not planning to sit shiva but I've changed my mind. I will be at 220 Wycoff Way West, East Brunswick (in the Club condominium community at Evergreen Blvd. and Cranberry Road) Tuesday afternoon after 4pm and Wednesday and Thursday. As IHG pointed out, shiva is to give the family some rest as much as anything else.
